Benefits by design

A living roof should answer a real brief

Habitat and biodiversity

A carefully designed mix of planting and habitat features can support wildlife in built-up areas. Ecological value depends on species, substrate diversity, local context and ongoing care—not simply on the presence of greenery.

Rainwater management

Vegetation and substrate retain some rainfall and can slow runoff. Performance varies with weather, moisture and system design. Where controlled discharge is required, a coordinated blue-green solution may be appropriate.

Membrane protection

A suitable build-up can shield waterproofing from direct sunlight and temperature exposure. This does not remove the need for correct detailing, a compatible membrane or maintenance.

Summer surface cooling

Plant cover and evapotranspiration can influence roof temperatures. Building energy savings depend on insulation, climate and the roof design, so a universal savings figure would be misleading.

Views and usable space

Planting can improve outlooks. An intensive roof designed for safe access may also provide garden or amenity space; extensive roofs are not automatically intended for public use.

A project-wide strategy

Green roofs can contribute to landscape, ecology and drainage objectives. Planning approval or an assessment credit is not automatic: the relevant requirements need to be addressed by the project team.

A balanced decision

Allow for the practical commitments

Upfront coordination

Structural loading, waterproofing, drainage, wind and fire considerations must be assessed. Installation access and material handling also affect cost and programme.

Long-term care

Planting needs establishment and maintenance, with safe access to outlets and inspection points. Agree who will care for the roof and budget for that from the start.
