The Project-

Lombard Square is a major new neighbourhood being delivered in Plumstead as part of the ongoing transformation of the Royal Arsenal area. The development will provide a mix of high-quality new homes set around a central landscaped park, along with new amenities and improved public realm. Sustainability and long-term environmental performance are central to the vision for the scheme.

The Challenge

Berkeley Homes sought to maximise the sustainability and functional performance of the development’s extensive roof areas. The team required a robust blue-roof strategy for podium sections to manage stormwater effectively, alongside green and brown roofs on the residential blocks to boost biodiversity and support long-term ecological value. A specialist partner was needed to design, coordinate, and install the system in line with the project’s architectural intent and construction sequencing.

Our Solution

On behalf of the client, Green Roofers delivered:

Blue roofs across podium levels to support stormwater attenuation and controlled discharge.

Green and brown roofs on residential blocks, incorporating a diverse mix of native wildflowers, sedum, and substrate types to encourage habitats for pollinators and urban wildlife.

Full design, supply, and installation delivered in close collaboration with the on-site construction team across multiple phases.

Continued support through maintenance, performance monitoring, and consultation on future green infrastructure opportunities within the wider development.

Outcomes

Green Roofers’ involvement has contributed significant value to Lombard Square through:

Enhanced stormwater management is delivered by the blue-roof system, which temporarily retains rainfall during peak events, reducing pressure on local drainage networks.

Improved biodiversity and ecological resilience from the green and brown roof installations, providing a varied landscape that supports wildlife and helps mitigate urban heat effects.

Long-term sustainability benefits, including CO₂ reduction, improved air quality, and added amenity value for residents.

“Lombard Square represents an exciting new chapter for Plumstead, and we’re pleased to have played a key role in delivering a roofscape that is both functional and environmentally ambitious.”
