Barking Riverside
Commercial-Housing Redevelopment
Location: Project Rd, Barking
The Project-
Fresh off the back of old factory grounds, Barking Riverside rises where smoke once curled into grey skies. Stretching across nearly two hundred hectares by the Thames, it reshapes decay into something built to last. Homes begin to fill spaces that stood empty for decades, each shaped around cleaner air and greener routines. Movement gets easier here - new routes for walking, riding, reaching beyond. Schools, parks, and places to gather take root without fanfare. Every path, every wall, every window considers what heat and waste do before they happen.
The Challenge
Starting at ground level, the crew brought in roof specialists to handle brown roofs on multiple housing buildings. Not only did these rooftops have to fit within the site’s environmental goals, but they also had to withstand heavy use with little upkeep. From day one, timing mattered - work unfolded alongside the main build schedule without delays. Smooth handoffs between teams kept everything moving, fitting each piece like part of a larger puzzle.
Our Solution
On behalf of the client, Green Roofers delivered:
Built right into rooftops, these setups skip sedum entirely. Instead of manufactured mats, they rely on raw materials found outdoors. Not about quick green cover - focus stays on local soil types. Rather than uniform plants, you get what naturally takes root. What grows comes from nearby fields or windblown seeds. No present patterns shape the outcome. Over time, it shifts as any wild patch would.
Over time, nature slowly takes hold where different substrate levels meet reused materials. Depths shift beneath the surface, guiding roots and tiny lives alike. Old stones once discarded now form pockets for moss, then beetles, then something new again.
Work happened in several buildings, set up alongside builders already at the location.
Still talking with experts about what works well for ground materials and how nature grows around them.
Outcomes
Thanks to Green Roofers, the project gained extra strength in several areas. Their work helped improve overall quality without slowing progress down. The skills they brought along made problem-solving easier when challenges appeared. The site now runs more smoothly because of the choices made early on. Long-term benefits started showing even before the finish line came into view.
Roofs coloured like tree bark last long without upkeep. One thing leads to another - nature moves in on its own. Over time, more kinds of living things settle there. Life finds its way across these spaces quietly.
Nowhere else do shifting materials mix so freely with earthy textures, offering space where bugs settle and first green things take root.
With each block, the project lifts its green profile - tying into Barking Riverside’s broader push for lasting balance. What shows up in one area supports another, quietly aligning goals without fanfare. Progress here feeds progress there, step by steady step.
“Barking Riverside is one of London’s most transformative regeneration schemes, and we are proud to have supported its sustainability goals through the delivery of high-quality brown roof systems.”
